Comprehensive Dentistry

Comprehensive dentistry involves the diagnosis and treatment of general conditions affecting the teeth, gums and jaw. Preventive care is an important part of comprehensive dentistry as it enables Dr. Villemarette to address problems while they are still small.

Periodontal (Gum) Care

According to the American Academy of Periodontology, gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss in adults over the age of 35. The prevalence of gum disease increases with age because as our teeth wear down, our gums naturally recede and certain medications can affect our oral health. If your gums feel tender or look red and swollen, you may be in the beginning stage of gum disease, called gingivitis. Other warning signs include bleeding gums, pain or sensitivity in your teeth and persistent bad breath. Untreated gum disease has been linked to an increased risk of stroke, heart attack and numerous other serious health problems.

Treatment for Gum Disease

If you have any degree of gum disease, Dr. Villemarette can help. Gum disease used to require surgery more often than not, and while surgery is still sometimes the best option, many cases can now be treated with less invasive techniques first.
